For the women of public safety who work to keep the town safe, the job involves capability, tenacity and the desire to help others.
Although they may be outnumbered compared to their male counterparts, law enforcement officers and firefighters in Palm Beach say their ability to work is what truly matters.
Officer Emily Pelayo, 29, said one of the things she loves about her job is that it gives her the opportunity to interact with different people.
“This job is the best because it’s never routine. I also have the exceptional ability to bond with the residents of the community and my fellow law enforcement officers,” she said.
A California native and the middle child of four siblings, Pelayo attended California State University, Dominguez Hills, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She relocated to Florida with husband Geovanny in 2014, and completed her police academy training in 2019.
Pelayo was hired as a parking enforcement officer for the department in 2017 and promoted to police officer two years later.
Though there is a large difference in the number of male and female officers in the department, it doesn’t bother her, Pelayo said, because she considers herself lucky to live in a time when women in law enforcement aren’t “frowned upon as they used to be.” There Aren’t Many Thing I Love More Than Being A Firefighter But One Of Them Is Being A Dad Shirt, hoodie
To prove her point, Pelayo patrols the streets while pregnant with her first child, who is due in June.
“During the police academy, women and men weren’t treated differently and were given the same training,” Pelayo said. “Here at the Palm Beach Police Department, I have always been treated fairly and with respect from my fellow officers and my command staff.”
The fact remains that a large gap exists between men and women in the town’s public safety departments. According to Palm Beach Police, only six officers are women out of 69, two of them sergeants. Town of Palm Beach Fire Rescue has a total of 11 women out of 75 firefighters. Two of them are lieutenants.
