Because Pugs have a short nose and lack of bone above the eyes, they are very susceptible to eye damage, eye problems such as bulging eyes, corneal scratches, and eyelids. Their airways are also very narrow, making it difficult to breathe or unable to regulate body temperature through evaporation of the tongue. A Pug’s normal body temperature ranges from 101 °F (38 °C) to 102 °F (39 °C). If its body temperature exceeds 105 °F (41 °C), the need for oxygen is increased and immediate hypothermia is required. If the body temperature reaches 108 °F (42 °C), organ damage will occur. Pug’s breathing difficulties can be aggravated if it is stressed while being transported by air, as it is kept in tight spaces and high temperatures. Due to the deaths of many Pugs and other short-skulled species, many airlines have banned shipments and enacted seasonal restrictions.
