The Cat puts in a large red outer box from which he drops two identical characters, or “Things” as he mentions, with blue hair and red clothes known as Thing. One and Thing Two. Things get more troublesome, such as flying a kite indoors, smashing pictures on the wall, and the kids’ new selection of polka dots. All this ends when the fish sees the children’s mother outside the window. In response, the boy catches the things in the net and the cat, embarrassed, stores them back in the big red box. He brought it to the door before you and the kids could see what he did. But the Cat soon returns, the motorcycle tidies everything up and cleans the windows, delighting the fish and the kids. Then the cat left before the mother arrived, the fish and the babies returned where they started the story. When she entered, the mother asked the children what they were doing while the mother was out, but the children hesitated and did not answer. The story ends with the question “What would you do if your mother asked you.
